November 9, 2011: The name "Little Havana" emerged in the 1960s as the concentration of Cubans in the area grew sharply. Right in the heart of Miami is an area that is from a Cuban storybook. Here in "Little Havana," you can find hand-rolled cigars, fruiterias, meat markets, herbal stores and windows with cafecitos. Although Miami is new, as far as cities are concerned, you can walk from downtown with all of its art deco high rises right into old-time Cuba. On 8th Street (or Calle Ocho), between 12th and 27th Avenues, lies a time warp into another reality.

Home to the most famous of Miami's domino clubs, Maximo Gomez Park is a small park located on the corner of S.W. 15 Avenue and S.W. 8 Street in Little Havana.

Domino Park resides in one of the predominantly Cuban districts of the greater Miami area. It is a gathering place for the men and women of Little Havana. They have congregated in the mini-park for years, challenging each other to domino games. Although players sometimes choose to challenge each other to games of chess, the main staple of the park is dominos. The park received its nickname, Domino Park, for that very reason.

Máximo Gómez y Báez was born on November 18, 1836 in Baní, Dominican Republic and died on June 17, 1905 in Havana, Cuba. He was a Major General in the Ten Years' War (1868–1878) and Cuba's military commander in that Country's War of Independence (1895–1898).

Domino Plaza is located between S.W. 8th and 9th Streets on a pedestrian-only portion of S.W. 15th Avenue.

This is a part of the colorful mosaic mural that was designed by the famed Curras brothers. Identical twins, the Cuban-born Nelson and Ronald Curras live in Little Havana and are extremely talented ceramicists whose works are sold internationally.

The mosaic mural they designed and crafted incorporates local icons like tropical fruits, flowers and dominos. Within the mural are framed images of Cuba. The mural has become an icon of the neighborhood.

Also within the Plaza there is colored paving as well as extra large dominos, which often inspire kids to hop on them, hopscotch style. The Curras brothers also created the paving design for the Plaza.
