In 1961, members of the Alabama Air National Guard (ANG) secretly took part in the Bay of Pigs invasion. Approximately 60 members of the Alabama Guard were involved, including four pilots and four enlisted crewmembers who flew four bombers (two per bomber) to support the invasion by U.S.-backed Cuban exiles. These eight Alabama guardsmen flew combat missions on the last day when the Cuban pilots were exhausted. The Café Bustelo concept was imagined by the sixth generation of the Souto family, currently at the helm of Rowland Coffee Roasters, which underwent a rebirth of its own, following the third generation of the Souto family’s relocation from Cuba, where the company was born in 1865, to Miami in the 1960s, where it resumed operations.
Today, more than 130 years since the company’s inception, in a different place and time, the Souto family still follows its family’s philosophy that the best coffee is achieved through excellent quality beans and roasting perfection. ![Mosaic Mural in Domino Plaza next to Máximo Gómez Park aka Domino Park
Domino Plaza is located between S.W. 8th and 9th Streets on a pedestrian-only portion of S.W. 15th Avenue.
This is a part of the colorful mosaic mural that was designed by the famed Curras brothers. Identical twins, the Cuban-born Nelson and Ronald Curras live in Little Havana and are extremely talented ceramicists whose works are sold internationally.
The mosaic mural they designed and crafted incorporates local icons like tropical fruits, flowers and dominos. Within the mural are framed images of Cuba. The mural has become an icon of the neighborhood.
Also within the Plaza there is colored paving as well as extra large dominos, which often inspire kids to hop on them, hopscotch style. The Curras brothers also created the paving design for the Plaza.
